Family of Jefferson Portingall

Jefferson Portingall was the son of John Searle Portingall of Pylmouth, England and Roseanna Travers of Dutchess Co, NY.
Jefferson was born in 1838 in Weedsport, Cayuga Co, NY.
He joined the Civil War on Sept 13, 1862 in Auburn, NY. On May 16, 1864, at Drurys Bluff, Va, he received a gunshot wound in his right leg that resulted in amputation of the upper third of his leg. He was captured and sent to Andersonville Prison.
After the War, he moved to Brooklyn, NY where he married Julia Bond and they had 3 children.
Jefferson died Dec 17, 1883 and Julia died Oct 28, 1889.

John Portingall, a painter by trade died on Sat. May 9, 1863 in a train accident in Auburn. His wife Roseanne lived with their children until her death on Feb 15,1895.

James born in 1842,
Mary Helen born between 1845 & 1848,
Emily born 1849.
James enlisted on Oct 14, 1861, at Auburn, NY as Private in Co B 19th NY Volunteers serving as a Drummer. The regiment changed to 3rd Artillery. After the war, he lived in Brooklyn with his wife Eliza Clark.
Helen married William Van Buren Doty & they lived in Auburn, NY with their son Harold.
Emily married Thomas Powell. By 1880 she was a widowed nurse in Brooklyn.
